Gary's actions
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 50 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Climate
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 25 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Advocate For More Food Options
Access to affordable, nutritious food is a food justice issue. I will advocate for local and/or organic food options in my state and/or community.
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 12 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Oceans
Support Organic Growing Methods
I will buy organic cotton and foods grown without the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 20 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
People
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 40 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Forests
Plant Trees
I will plant 010 native tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a trash pickup at a local river or beach that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
People
Write Letters or Emails
I will write 01 letter(s) or email(s) per day to a public official or company to advocate for planet-friendly and/or environmentally just policies.
Climate
Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to Earth
I will express my love and gratitude for our Earth by writing a love letter, poem, or song to Earth.

Gary Swick 4/30/2020 3:08 PMThat's it. I am very proud of my efforts and my team's. -
Gary Swick 4/27/2020 6:44 AMForgot again to post yesterday. -
Gary Swick 4/25/2020 8:52 AMI have completed all my one time challenges. Continuing to daily spend time outside and collect litter. Somedays, it has been a weather challenge to get out side. Sadly, litter is never absent. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Write Letters or EmailsHow might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems - like plastic pollution - differently?
Gary Swick 4/25/2020 8:44 AMProduct design should include its ability to be reclaimed. Having homogenous content is key to this. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Gary Swick 4/25/2020 8:42 AMOspreys eat primarily fish. Unlike their other similar fish eating bird of prey, the Bald Eagle, they dive into the water to grab their prey. Eagles grab them from the surface. When eagles fly with the fis, they hold it with feet together. Ospry fly with one talon in front of the other so the fish head is forward and aerodynamic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Gary Swick 4/23/2020 11:04 AMOur standard lawns have little habitat for pollinators. That are essential for a healthy ecosystem. The lawns provide little food and the maintenance chemicals are an additional threat. They need all the help they can get from us.
Without pollinators, our agricultural system will collapse. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Join a Cleanup EffortHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Gary Swick 4/23/2020 11:01 AMVery proud.
My group usually does 5 spring clean ups. Tomorrow (Arbor Day) my organization is rolling out a 3 month long clean up. Asking individuals to do their own collections, then post on our event page to inspire others. It will bring individual and collect pride. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Gary Swick 4/23/2020 10:58 AMWell, I think we are understanding that we can do so many things remotely. It is not the same energy, but can have other attributes. I am not flying to a conference in May. The normal 3 day event is being offered over a 3 week period. The sessions are pretty easy to duplicate, but they are also including the awards ceremony, film night and open mic.
Should be fun. Could be a new conference style. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to EarthWhat are you grateful for about our planet? Share what you created or your general thoughts of love and gratitude with everyone else!
Gary Swick 4/20/2020 6:54 AMI have been inspired by this challenge. I hope everyone will try it. It felt very uplifting to offer gratitude to the mother that cares for us. -
Gary Swick 4/20/2020 6:48 AMI have been meeting challenges every day, but forgetting to daily report.-
Maria Aristeo 4/20/2020 1:51 PMSame! I'm setting little reminders on phone now. Maybe you can try a similar approach?
