Carissa's actions
Climate
Local Climate Issues
I will spend at least 20 minute(s) a day researching climate issues or climate solutions in my local area and share with others through my team feed, social media, or conversations with my peers.
Climate
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 3 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 40 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 45 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 35 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Carissa Thiel 4/14/2020 6:28 PMThis data does not surprise me. I do well with limiting food waste and am trying to help my parents. They often over buy and tuck things to the back. It's difficult during this time though to shop more for smaller bundles of fresh food. I'd rather th money for books or travel. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Eco-friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Carissa Thiel 4/11/2020 6:53 PMIn my childhood home the concern for plants is the clay in the soil . Using leaves as a natural mulch can help hold the water for plants. In My new home flooding is a concern, so setting up yards with plants that hold more water is helpful -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Local Climate IssuesIn what ways is your local community resilient to shock events like we’ve experienced recently? How could you help it become more resilient?
Carissa Thiel 4/10/2020 6:20 PMMy community is resilient in a stubborn way. I can add by encouraging different reasons to be resilient, and leading by example -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Carissa Thiel 4/07/2020 12:13 PMThat quote rings true for me, but if it rang true for everyone we'd have more natural space left. I think now is a valuable time for us to acknowledge where priorities lie, and how we can help others evaluate theirs. Right now most content we're creating is encouraging people to get outside, but with many spaces closed it's more a snuff in the face for those that can't afford yards. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Carissa Thiel 4/04/2020 8:31 PMMy trip was forcefully restructured with the current health concerns, but luckily still a manageable drive. I have a decently sized efficient car, so can compare fuel costs more often in the future to limit flying. Having a second driver would make longer distances more manageable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Carissa Thiel 4/02/2020 6:03 AMMy experiences biking and walking help me meet new neighbors faster. People are likely to comment on bikes, especially if I have groceries in my basket. Many of my friends in the city thought I just didn't have a car, and my choice to be more eco-friendly with transportation has encourage some of them to bike with me more often.
