Maggie's actions
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Food
Advocate For More Food Options
Access to affordable, nutritious food is a food justice issue. I will advocate for local and/or organic food options in my state and/or community.
Forests
Plant Trees
I will plant 1 native tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
Bringing home unique souvenirs from trips you’ve enjoyed is meaningful, and giving people unique gifts from other places is fun. Seek souvenirs and gifts that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Fresh Water
Water-Friendly Beauty Products
Avoid beauty products with micro beads or harsh chemicals that will feed into the ground and your water supply.
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 3 hour(s) in my community helping people who are most at need right now, including elderly and immunocompromised people, people without childcare, and people whose jobs have been affected by social distancing measures.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Climate
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support A Sharing Economy
To reduce my consumption and waste and support my community, I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Maggie Tracey 4/30/2020 6:54 PMA few more weeks and I'll be able to plant my zillions of zinnias outside. Can't wait!! -
Maggie Tracey 4/30/2020 12:04 PMCan't wait for my tiny seedlings to get as big as this beauty from last summer! -
Maggie Tracey 4/30/2020 9:14 AMBigger seedlings are butternut squash plants that I started from seeds plucked right out of a squash that sat on my kitchen counter for a long time before I cooked it. SO EASY and those seeds were free! The smaller ones will be red sunflowers. All will be transplanted outside in 2-3 weeks. Cooking tip: I pureed the squash and add 1/2 cup to mac n'cheese to add creaminess without extra dairy. -
Maggie Tracey 4/28/2020 7:38 PMThe brief sunny spell we had today before the rain set in reminded me of my longest hike this past fall - Topanga State Park in California.-
MARIA ALBULESCU 4/29/2020 5:39 PMSo beautiful! Thanks for sharing, Maggie!
I miss hiking! I'm planning a hiking/biking day trip in Wisconsin next weekend.

Maggie Tracey 4/28/2020 7:49 AM2 days left in the challenge, let's make them count! Inspire others to take action for the environment! Avoid single use plastics, and make better use of the ones you already have before recycling them (container garden?). Plant a veggie or herb garden. Paint or reupholster an old piece of furniture to give it new life. -
Maggie Tracey 4/27/2020 8:53 AMThis time last year I was in Georgia hiking the Blue Ridge Mountains. Whilst at home, we can still cast our imaginations to destinations past and future!

MARIA ALBULESCU 4/29/2020 5:45 PMI saw that some national parks now offer virtual tours. Not the same experience, but it's still cool to see it.

Maggie Tracey 4/27/2020 8:51 AMWe are in the homestretch of the ecochallenge! Let's make sure to check-in each day to get those same day bonus points, and do those daily challenges to have a positive impact on the environment! -
Maggie Tracey 4/23/2020 4:24 PMCurrently doing more research to improve my composting efforts. If you compost at home, share something you've learned with me. -
Maggie Tracey 4/23/2020 4:17 PMHow did you celebrate Earth Day yesterday? I enjoyed discussing gardening with our WES-BRG members and have been working on starting seeds this week so I'll be ready in late May to get my flowers and veggies going outside. -
