Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Research Benefits of Biodiversity
How can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?

I can encourage biodiversity by cleaning up trash, putting bird feeders in my yard, planting flowers, regulating weeds in my yard, and reducing my carbon emissions.

Action Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
What environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?

I have been working on using as little electricity and water as possible by turning off any unnecessary lights or using daylight when I can. As well as taking shorter showers and turning off the faucets to conserve water. I try to be consistent by being more mindful of my everyday actions.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Forests Forest-Friendly Foods
How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

    Isabelle Tsiros's avatar
    Isabelle Tsiros 4/17/2020 2:26 PM
I had to be more mindful about what I was eating and the products that I was using, but it too wasn't too difficult to find foods/products that were forest friendly.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

    Isabelle Tsiros's avatar
    Isabelle Tsiros 4/13/2020 7:02 AM
A lot of the food that I was throwing away were fruits and vegetables that could've been composted or left over food. I will use my compost everyday by composting things I eat like banana peels and egg shells.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

    Isabelle Tsiros 4/13/2020 6:56 AM
The amount of food and money an average family waste on food is very shocking. I knew that a lot was wasted but I didn't expect it to be that much. I would rather use the money on things that would help our environment such as buying bikes instead of driving.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Isabelle Tsiros's avatar
    Isabelle Tsiros 4/13/2020 6:50 AM
People in richer countries can afford to raise more livestock. Eating more meat affects our planet by creating fossil fuels during the production of meat, methane released by animals, effluent wastes, and so many more. When people eat more meat, it not only hurts our environment but it also impacts our health. When we consume more meat, we are at a higher risk for heart disease and cancers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    Isabelle Tsiros's avatar
    Isabelle Tsiros 4/13/2020 6:34 AM
Yes I do agree with Rachel Carson, I think it is very important for us to spend time outside everyday. It can have so many benefits including our development emotionally and spiritually. Even going outside and sitting on the porch and doing something, taking a walk, sitting out in the sun, or a taking a bike ride can be implications for today.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    People Connect While Social Distancing
How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

Connecting with others makes me feel more involved and connected to other people. The ability to be able to see my friends through my phone and talk to them, makes me feel like i'm not so isolated by myself. It's human nature to want to connect and its not in our nature to stay isolated. Connecting can also help others in the same way, so they don't feel so distance from everything else.
