Gabby's actions

Action Track: Building Resilience

Support Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 5 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

Learn about Our Oceans

I will spend at least 5 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.

Research a Wild Animal

I will spend at least 5 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).

Even though it was very rainy today, I still tried to get outside for a little bit with my dog when the rain lightened up just to get out.

The past few days have been so nice out so I have been going out a lot more and spending time with my family outside. I have been playing catch with my little brother and taking my dog for walks. I have overall been having fun spending time outside all day long.

Being able to connect with friends over FaceTime or on phone calls has helped me a lot. It makes me feel better talking to them and knowing how they're doing since I don't get to see them everyday like I used to.

Gabby, I can really relate to this! It's so nice to see familiar faces and check in on each other.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Research a Wild Animal
What interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?

I researched a lion and one thing I found interesting is that you can hear a lion's roar from as far as 5 miles away. Some of my favorite things about this animal are how pretty and powerful they look and that they are such strong animals.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Research Benefits of Biodiversity
How can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?

    Gabby Vargas's avatar
    Gabby Vargas 4/19/2020 5:06 PM
One way to encourage biodiversity with my own actions is to use any existing green space and be mindful of non-native predators in the everyday life.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Oceans Learn about Our Oceans
What is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?

    Gabby Vargas's avatar
    Gabby Vargas 4/17/2020 3:23 PM
The ocean regulates our climate, absorbs carbon dioxide, and hold 97% of the world's water. You can take care of the ocean by using less plastic products because a lot of the plastic is getting put into the ocean and hurting those animals.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Gabby Vargas's avatar
    Gabby Vargas 4/17/2020 3:20 PM
It helps when going to the store and buying a product because sell by is mainly for the manufacturers and use by is the last day you should use it. Best by indicates the best time with the products flavor. This will help when shopping for food products.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Support Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

    Gabby Vargas's avatar
    Gabby Vargas 4/17/2020 3:16 PM
It is important to take care of pollinators because they are very important when creating and maintaining ecosystems that many animals rely on for food and shelter everyday.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

    Gabby Vargas's avatar
    Gabby Vargas 4/13/2020 2:56 PM
Walking helps you see a better view of what's around you and see people you haven't before. I like walk or running in my community because I see new parts of nature that I didn't know about before.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

Since we can't go see my close friends that I was with everyday at school, I FaceTime or call them so that I'm able to talk and stay up to date with them. This brightens my day to know that I can still talk to the people I'm close with and those that make me the happiest.
