Gabby's actions
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 5 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 5 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 5 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 2 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Climate
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Wildlife
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 5 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 5 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Gabby Vargas 4/29/2020 9:09 AMEven though it was very rainy today, I still tried to get outside for a little bit with my dog when the rain lightened up just to get out. -
Gabby Vargas 4/27/2020 10:59 AMThe past few days have been so nice out so I have been going out a lot more and spending time with my family outside. I have been playing catch with my little brother and taking my dog for walks. I have overall been having fun spending time outside all day long. -
Gabby Vargas 4/23/2020 10:24 AMBeing able to connect with friends over FaceTime or on phone calls has helped me a lot. It makes me feel better talking to them and knowing how they're doing since I don't get to see them everyday like I used to.-
Maria Aristeo 4/23/2020 12:13 PMGabby, I can really relate to this! It's so nice to see familiar faces and check in on each other.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Gabby Vargas 4/19/2020 5:11 PMI researched a lion and one thing I found interesting is that you can hear a lion's roar from as far as 5 miles away. Some of my favorite things about this animal are how pretty and powerful they look and that they are such strong animals. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Gabby Vargas 4/19/2020 5:06 PMOne way to encourage biodiversity with my own actions is to use any existing green space and be mindful of non-native predators in the everyday life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Gabby Vargas 4/17/2020 3:23 PMThe ocean regulates our climate, absorbs carbon dioxide, and hold 97% of the world's water. You can take care of the ocean by using less plastic products because a lot of the plastic is getting put into the ocean and hurting those animals. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Gabby Vargas 4/17/2020 3:20 PMIt helps when going to the store and buying a product because sell by is mainly for the manufacturers and use by is the last day you should use it. Best by indicates the best time with the products flavor. This will help when shopping for food products. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Gabby Vargas 4/17/2020 3:16 PMIt is important to take care of pollinators because they are very important when creating and maintaining ecosystems that many animals rely on for food and shelter everyday. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Gabby Vargas 4/13/2020 2:56 PMWalking helps you see a better view of what's around you and see people you haven't before. I like walk or running in my community because I see new parts of nature that I didn't know about before. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Gabby Vargas 4/13/2020 2:54 PMSince we can't go see my close friends that I was with everyday at school, I FaceTime or call them so that I'm able to talk and stay up to date with them. This brightens my day to know that I can still talk to the people I'm close with and those that make me the happiest.
