Kate's actions
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support A Sharing Economy
To reduce my consumption and waste and support my community, I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Climate
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Climate
Local Climate Issues
I will spend at least 5 minute(s) a day researching climate issues or climate solutions in my local area and share with others through my team feed, social media, or conversations with my peers.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 3 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Forests
Advocate for Forest Protection
I will contact 1 congress people or representatives to advocate for public policy that protects forests and improves their ability to sequester carbon and nourish biodiversity.
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 2 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Food
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 60 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Kate Walker 4/06/2020 6:07 PMI forget how to just check in for the day... help-
Sue Kane 4/06/2020 8:27 PMIf you don't have your original invitation, you can put "ecochallenge" into your web browser, then log in. Jeanne's correct, next go to your dashboard. -
Jeanne Poirier 4/06/2020 8:14 PMI have found it hard at times even two years in! Be sure to save the Eco-Challenge email original which welcomes you and visit your dashboard. Once you are in the dashboard you can pretty much go to areas unknown and still come out okay! DO CHECK BACK if you have more trouble and do NOT be embarrassed! While I've never asked for help from Eo-Chalenge folks, they do say to ask for help. Bottom line dear Kate - don't give up!

Kate Walker 4/04/2020 4:31 PMI am realizing I am double thinking what I really need. Do I need to stop at the store for oat milk, or can it wait until I have a larger list on needs? It feels good.-
Jeanne Poirier 4/04/2020 7:59 PMYes - and for those of us who live farther, how long the list before going. :)

Kate Walker 4/03/2020 1:21 PMI like to see the positive side of events that at face value appear terrible. So, this pandemic/stay at home order has potentially allowed some people to realize what we can do with out, how we can survive without getting in the car daily to run around, and we may realized what is actually important in life. Potentially a great learning opportunity in that and other ways.-
Jeanne Poirier 4/03/2020 8:45 PMWhew - now extended learning!! Sue Kane tells me to remember it is for her grandkids . . . it helps a little. I'm making more PPE masks now. :(
