Last day of this challenge! Appreciate that this month I have learned a ton about local climate change and other environmental issues, spent extra time outside, reduced my shower water use, started buying offsets for my electricity use, remembered to buy eco-friendly beauty products, and more!

I'm all about hydropower as a clean energy source, but I understand it carries some environmental concerns. Here's a good article on what hydropower companies can do to preserve river ecosystems and lesson their impacts. https://www.hydroreform.org/abouthydro/modernizing-hydropower

Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

I know that our energy in Spokane is mostly hydropower, so it's pretty clean. I don't think my husband and I use a lot of electricity or gas- we keep our house at 66 degrees in winter and we don't have AC in summer. We turn of lights (except my plant lights- those might use a bit of energy) and rarely use space heaters. We cook a lot on our gas stove, but usually big meals that we eat leftovers of the whole week (so pretty efficient cooking). We do have two freezers so we could consider nixing one of those but the freezers help a lot with our zero-waste efforts, and I would have to go shopping a lot more often without them. It's a tradeoff. Anyone have suggestions for what else we could do?

I think I've saved about 900 gallons of water this month by taking shorter showers (don't do the math or you'll figure out how long my showers normally are). Cheers to positive change!

I didn’t know that the particles from phytoplankton facilitate cloud formation which drives worldwide climate patterns! ANd they protecting hunters like bluefin tuna and sharks is essential to keeping the right balance and nutrients for phytoplankton. I plan to use my seafood watch app and find out more about activist efforts to promote sustainable fishing practices.

I’m supposed to get 100 g of protein while I’m pregnant- would need some serious lifestyle changes to be able to do this without eating meat or dairy. How many grams do you vegans get per day?

What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

Spokane gets all of our water from a super clean ginormous aquifer (the City doesn't even treat it except to add chlorine for maintaining water quality in the pipes), so saving water goes a long way to protecting this resource. Someone mentioned to me the other day that they worked in the water industry in Australia where folks had reduced their use to 45 L per (person or household not sure) per day, which is WAY less than the American average. I think that Americans need to change our view of what water use is necessary. The hard thing in Spokane is because our water is so clean and available, it's also cheap, which keeps people from changing their behavior.
