Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

I assume that people in richer countries eat more meat because it is more of a luxury food. The meat industry costs so much money to maintain. Farms and slaughter houses take money to open and keep open and that is where the meat comes from. Countries with less rich people do not eat as much meat because there are other foods that are cheaper to eat such as plants.
