Currently many farms in the US are owned by huge companies who own and maintain the means by which farmers produce food. Seeds rarely come from farmers and instead come from big companies making heirloom varieties of plants and farmer independence a thing of the past. Farmers can no longer fix their own tractors and now rely on big companies to do so. Lack of food soveinity is one of the core problems with our agrarian system and is responsible for much of its enviromental impact.
