Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 20 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Climate
Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to Earth
I will express my love and gratitude for our Earth by writing a love letter, poem, or song to Earth.
Climate
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Climate
Use Public Transit
If a necessary trip is longer than I can walk or bike, I will use public transit 4 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere, while being sure to follow CDC guidelines for prevention of disease infection or transfer.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 5 hour(s) in my community helping people who are most at need right now, including elderly and immunocompromised people, people without childcare, and people whose jobs have been affected by social distancing measures.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 6 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Use Public TransitHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Crystal Young 4/28/2020 4:49 PMHaving access to a local bus route system throughout my life has enabled me to appreciate public transportation. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to EarthWhat are you grateful for about our planet? Share what you created or your general thoughts of love and gratitude with everyone else!
Crystal Young 4/28/2020 4:47 PMI am grateful for life itself. The Earth is incredible and beautiful. Literally everything any plant, animal, or creature needs to survive is provided for be the Earth. Food, water, variety in nearly everything, and some of the most beautiful things ever seen were created from and for the Earth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
Crystal Young 4/28/2020 4:45 PMI could protect the environment by traveling less frequently. I often take drives, for no other reason than to drive, and would like to cut down the amount of time I spend in the car. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy CreditsYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Crystal Young 4/28/2020 4:44 PMMy usage is about the same as others in my local community, however, I would be significantly happier if the amount of energy I used came from solar energy. That is an investment I am going to make in the future. I also plan on cutting down my electricity usage by turning off lights when I leave the room and only washing clothes or dishes when the machine is full. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Advocate For More Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Crystal Young 4/28/2020 4:40 PMOcean pollution concerns me the most because the use of plastic products has a negative impact on the various animals and creatures that call the ocean home, which in turn, directly negatively affects humans as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Crystal Young 4/28/2020 4:39 PMOceans support life on Earth because around 50-70% of our oxygen comes from the oceans. People need oxygen to live, so ultimately we need the ocean. I can advocate for more earth-friendly resources and less ocean pollution and plastic products. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Eco-friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Crystal Young 4/28/2020 4:37 PMAccess would be the most prominent water concern in my area because myself and the people who live around me depend on well water and sewage systems for our water. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local OrganizationsWhy is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?
Crystal Young 4/28/2020 4:35 PMIt's important to support local, in general, because supporting your local community members helps the community itself grow. Instead of giving away our money to big businesses, we should invest our money in our communities so that we can help support each other. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco TipsWhat environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?
Crystal Young 4/28/2020 4:34 PMI have started learning how to grow and plant my own plants, including trees, flowers, and learning to grow my own food. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Crystal Young 4/28/2020 4:32 PMVolunteering in my community allows me to meet the various people who also call it home while helping them in whatever way possible, so that we can give them a reason to smile while making their lives easier, even amongst this current crisis.
