Claudia's actions

Climate

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

Forests

Forest-Friendly Foods

I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.

Climate

Use Public Transit

If a necessary trip is longer than I can walk or bike, I will use public transit 6 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere, while being sure to follow CDC guidelines for prevention of disease infection or transfer.

Advocate For More Packaging Options

Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.

How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

It took some time to change the habit, to learn to read the ingredients' list and to understand it. Coffee was not the problem, as I buy my coffee from someone who supports indigenous people in the Sierra Nevada in Columbia. The coffee grows wild without any pesticides. Palmoil was more difficult. There are so many hidden names for it.

    Wildlife Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

It took me a while to solve this problem as I am often a spontaneous buyer.
    1. I have now reusable bags in my office and at home.
2 I have a mealplan for the week and make plans when I do my shopping, i.e. once a week to the supermarket and on Saturdays to the farmers market.
This has reduced the problem. However, sometimes it is still hard to get something without package and especially plastic, which still annoys me. Ok, we also have some shops where you can put the goods into glasses which you have brought from home. But most of these things are pasta, rice, legumes, which I do not have in my diet.

How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

I always loved walking through the city, always experiencing new ways, new areas. Every part of the city is different and you learn more while walking then by car or bus. I love to see the different acitecture, the people who live in this area, shops, cafés, it tells you a lot of the people. And in addition I do something for the climate when I leave my car at home.

    Climate Use Public Transit
How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

I live in a city with good transportation system. I usually take the bus or subway to work and use the car only when I need to drive longer distances. For me it is important to have the possibility and then I will choose the public transportation.
