Spending time outdoors, especially in nature has a tendency to remind people the amazing qualities our planet possess, such as beauty and power. Furthermore, rarely does one natural landscape remind you of another - nature is unique and therefore it naturally creates a sense of place.

In a way it reverts back to the old way of farming when family farms were abundant. This is good for multiple reasons, it controls for aspects that are currently leading to large and complex issues due to the sizes of most operations.

Glad to have participated in the Earth Day Challenge, sorry to see it end.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

I do find this surprising because people are so stringent with money in other aspects, but don't care much about all this money wasted on food getting thrown out! I would rather spend this money on trips and travel.

    Ode to Compost
They call you smelly, and say you're gross,
Yet I've always kept you close.
You're full of mystery yet remain unexplored,
But please know you are deeply adored.
You help to nourish crops as they grow,
Sadly, few humans this fact know.
But I pledge to teach everyone about you,
And all of the wonderful things you do!

My favorite environmentally friendly habit: Staying informed in streamlined, accessible ways! I'm interested in so many topics under the sustainability umbrella, from knowing where my food comes from and supporting local food systems, to cutting down my carbon footprint and waste, to sustainable fashion and mindful consumption. And while I don't use social media much these days, I am on Instagram the most often, checking my feed basically every day. I found that by following sustainability minded accounts (including sustainablecornell!), I can keep learning and stay informed about issues and updates happening in multiple industries, all over the world. Knowledge is power!

We can aim to to wash our day's dishes all at once, so we can reduce the number of times we turn on the faucet and thereby the amount of time we let water run. Additionally, we can aim to reuse mugs throughout the day and avoid needlessly washing them multiple times a day.

I spent more time outside today, cutting my fallen over daffodils before it snows again!

  • Completed my first action! Go big red : )
