Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

Just last week, I threw away an unopened pack of sausage because it had been sitting in our fridge for a long time and the "sell-by" date had passed a week ago. I thought it would have gone bad, but apparently the "sell-by" date is just a way for stores to manage their inventories and ensure peak quality. The sausage was probably fine; I should have opened it up to check if it had spoiled. Next time I will!

Action Track: Building Resilience Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

I've dusted off my bike and started using it weekly. I run small errands on it or just go for a ride. It's definitely allowing me to explore more of my neighborhood and surrounding areas. I take different routes than I would in my car, and move at a slower pace where I can enjoy everyone's spring blooming gardens.

Action Track: Building Resilience Support Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

Pollination is necessary to support plant life. Not just our garden flowers, but the food we grow too. If plants don't get pollinated, they won't spread and grow and come back and we would run out of all vegetations that we rely on as humans.

    Forests Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

All the hikes and nature walks are currently closed for quarantine, but I did manage to visit and explore a nearby city neighborhood Cully Park. It is quite large and a newer build. I was happy to see plots of new trees had been planted on the sloped edge. As a whole, the more familiar you are with where you live, the more "in place" you will become. And if you and a place can become "old friends," you will be more likely to treat it kindly.

    Fresh Water Dishwasher Efficiency
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

Absolutely, we all need to learn to practice water-saving lifestyles now because we may not have a choice later. There's a lot of un-learning of conveniences to overcome in doing that, I know I'm guilty of those habits myself. I hope to learn some new water habits as I strive to meet this challenge this month.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

I always feel more grounded after I've spent some time outside. Sunshine & fresh air can wipe away all the cobwebs that accrue from indoors. (I don't get much pleasure going out when it's cold and rainy, however, and I have been avoiding this challenge on yucky days)

Should be easier to only shower once a month if we're all working from home!
