Happy 50th Anniversary of Earth Day!  Thinking today that most of you who are part of this challenge weren't even born in 1970.  This is also the 50th year of the birth of the USEPA, the agency that issued the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts.  I remember New York City before the Clean Air Act when catalytic converters weren't on our cars and a lot of garbage was incinerated with no filters on the stacks.  Buildings were black and so was the inside of my nose after being exposed on the city streets!  We owe a debt of gratitude to many scientists and policy makers who have gone before us and reclaimed much of the quality of our environment.  There's more to do, but we have a better place to work from due to those who began this work long before us.  Let's not let the current administration undo all that good work!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Fresh Water Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?

By creating a local task force of like-minded individuals, we can make the plea to corporations and get our local government, chamber of commerce and environmental improvement commissions to come together to attack the problem.

A couple of years ago I got involved in a storm drain labeling program with my local village.  This labeling initiative asked for volunteers to label drains to notify there was no dumping.  Most don't know that water runoff to drains goes directly back into our local waterways without treatment. Some individuals may view storm drains as trash receptacles for trash, used motor oil, leftover paint, pet waste or other pollutants. Storm drain labeling serves as an educational tool to remind people about the connection between storm drains and local water bodies.
