Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 20 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 20 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 2 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Forests
Choose Better Wood Products
I will only purchase wood and paper products from ecologically certified sources like Forest Stewardship Council.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Llyswen Berna 4/22/2020 8:03 PMMy household can get used to limiting water usage. Have shorter showers, wait for a full load of laundry or dishes to be done before running the machine. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local OrganizationsWhy is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?
Llyswen Berna 4/22/2020 8:02 PMThink globally but act locally. It is all about small impacts in the community that will accumulate to have large impacts in the world. Supporting small businesses helps support the local economy and community, improving people's lives. By supporting local organizations, you are helping them earn more money to become more resilient to economic failures in the future. Supporting local businesses also reduces GHG emissions from transport of goods, another way to help make the planet more resilient. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Llyswen Berna 4/22/2020 7:54 PMWithout pollinators, the lifecycle of plants is disrupted which then leads to a disruption of the food web and many other organsim's life cycles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Llyswen Berna 4/22/2020 7:52 PMI researched Axolotls and found that they live for 10-15 years! I thought it would be closer to 3-5. I also found that the pink coloring that people tend to associate with it is not common in nature, it mostly appears in captive Axolotls. Axolotls are only found in one lake complex in Mexico and are critically endangered. They are also one of the most researched salamander species and are the only salamander species to spend their whole life in water. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Llyswen Berna 4/22/2020 7:47 PMI will be more careful about which foods I throw away based on dates. I will instead pay attention to other cues that let me know the food is off (visual, smell, texture etc.). I have also educated my sister so that both people in the household know about expiration dates. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Llyswen Berna 4/22/2020 7:37 PMIf possible, I carry things by hand. If not possible, I get a paper bag that I then use as a container for recyclables before recycling it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Choose Better Wood ProductsBeyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?
Llyswen Berna 4/22/2020 7:35 PMI love walking through forests, they provide me with a calm place to destress and reconnect with nature. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Llyswen Berna 4/22/2020 7:33 PMI find that I am able to work through issues I am having by listening to how others are dealing with similar problems. It also gives me a good break in the day to spend time on just focusing on others.
