Marcia's actions
Action Track: Building Resilience
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 15 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 2 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 60 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 1 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Food
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Marcia Booth 5/01/2020 11:05 AMWhat I learned is that the more we challenge ourselves and the more we pay attention to things around us and the actions we take, the greater the chance to change for the better, reduce our impact and live a better life. -
Marcia Booth 4/30/2020 9:02 PMThe most difficult task in this challenge was to finish watching the documentaries I had selected. Dominion was far harder to watch than Earthlings. I cried the whole way through... Awful... How can all that be happening and be allowed, be legal??? How are people capable of doing those jobs and be able to be so cruel? Who could come up with those methods of treating a live, fellow sentient being? It is just insane what goes on in the meat, dairy, egg, fur, leather, down, cosmetics, entertainment, pet (and animal control) industries. And once you know it, you cannot "unknow" it and pretend free-range or cage-free or humane has any meaning in those industries. This is a devastating reality. We can find animal products in everything from soaps to gelatin. Things I had no idea... sometimes not even by reading the labels we know because ingredients may be under different names. I am more certain now than ever before that taking the steps to becoming vegan was the right thing to do. And I will do whatever I can to support the ones fighting for those animals - that's a very hard, hard job. -
Marcia Booth 4/30/2020 10:36 AMLast day! Let's finish strong!!! I'll see if I can finish my two one-time challenges. -
Marcia Booth 4/28/2020 5:06 AMStarting another day... still trying to get a regular schedule going - stop working at certain time has been the most difficult. It just runs through the day and then when I realize, the day is over. Gotta do better and follow my alarms. At leadt I have been getting my walks in! -
Marcia Booth 4/26/2020 5:59 PMI got myself to watch Earthlings. My gosh... the suffering, brutality, torture, heartless behavior of humans is simply gut wrenching. How can humans be so ugly, heartless, selfish, violent, irrational? Sometimes only for fun, entertainment or fashion. Always for profit. This was a very disturbing documentary, hard to watch. Even more disturbing is to know that that’s the reality and fate of so many animals. So many unnecessary, painful deaths. Sad. Heartbreaking. Horrible. Unforgettable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
Marcia Booth 4/26/2020 5:15 PMCorporate food production is geared towards maximizing profits and nothing else. Everything- including animals- are things, merchandise that only exists to make money no matter the method. And we eat who knows what, what kind of chemicals are applied/added, what kind of conditions they were grown, etc. We (consumers and producers) need to take control or at least have direct participation in the process. -
Marcia Booth 4/25/2020 10:42 PMI’ve been doing my challenges the best I can but logging has been more difficult. Sometimes it’s just hard to remember to log in and record what I have done. Just a few days to go for this one! -
Marcia Booth 4/20/2020 7:42 AMSchools are going to remain closed so the routine we are establishing now will remain until end of May - which is good news. But we hope covid goes away... maybe like magic wouldn't be a bad idea. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Marcia Booth 4/17/2020 12:32 PMI normally work from home and maintain contact with co-workers over the phone, chat, email, virtual meetings, etc. During this period of social-distancing we have been doing a little more and using computer cameras during meetings just to feel a little closer, make it a little more personal. Today we had a virtual lunch together just to chat and see how everyone is doing. This month we held a whole conference virtually and each participant had cameras on so we could interact better. Pretty cool that technology now allows us to do that! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Marcia Booth 4/17/2020 12:27 PMDisconnect and stress. That's what happens if we don't spend time outside. We only value what we love and to love we've got to know it, enjoy it, appreciate it. That's why it's so important to get children out, exploring and playing outside.
I have been walking around my community 15 minutes every day - looking for bunnies and saying hi to the birds. We have a Sandhill Crane family that adopted the end of a cul-de-sac by the lake as their home. I always say 'hi' to them :-)
