Gretchen's actions
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 1 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 2 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Gretchen Carey 4/16/2020 7:44 AMSeeing the actual numbers is shocking. Not only is it a waste, but that money could go to use in more meaningful ways. Honestly, I would rather donate $1,500 to conservation efforts or to charities helping feed those in need. Maybe invest in a small garden of my own to grow some of my own produce. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Gretchen Carey 4/15/2020 7:59 AMI have a lot of older relatives who live far away and have been in quarantine by themselves. I try to connect with them a least a couple of times a week. It lets me learn more about them as we chat and it gives them someone to talk to- sometimes for two hours. I have been able to slow down my life and connect on a more personal level with some of the most interesting and insightful people I know. Chatting with them gives me connection to people outside my daily norm which opens up perspective on life and the world around us.
