Local Climate Issues

I will spend at least 60 minute(s) a day researching climate issues or climate solutions in my local area and share with others through my team feed, social media, or conversations with my peers.

DAILY ACTIONS

Climate

Choose LED Bulbs

I will replace 10 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate

Stay on the Ground

Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Research a Wild Animal

I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Support Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 60 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

Bringing home unique souvenirs from trips you’ve enjoyed is meaningful, and giving people unique gifts from other places is fun. Seek souvenirs and gifts that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

Leave No Trace

I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.

What interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?

I watch many different nature and animal programs on TV. I love learning about their lives. There is so much we can learn from nature! One of my favorite animals is the black panther. I was surprised to learn that under all that black is the same kind of rosette  spots that golden Panthers have. I was amazed to learn that some have learned to hunt alligators! I love it's look and I admire it's stealthy hunting ability.

    Wildlife Support Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

I have a large garden filled with all types of bushes, fruits, flowering shrubs, vegetables, berries, and flowers. I'm always looking for new plants to try in my garden. That takes research...knowing what will grow in my garden and survive our winter's! I need pollinators to keep my plants producing, healthy and growing strong. Without them we would not have any fresh fruits and vegetables! Man cannot live healthy on meats alone!

I grow veggies in the spring and summer into fall and I support our farmers market. Plants support insect populations, which feed birds, which spread seeds through their droppings, making more plants for more insects and more birds! Supporting local farmers helps our community  by  bringing  fresh local grown food to everyone! Nothing better than fresh veggies! Delish!
