Laura's actions
Food
Watch film “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.”
My goal is to learn more about innovation that simultaneously addresses food security and climate change. To understand how challenges can be solved locally.
Climate
Research electric vehicles
The action is designed to take a step closer to making an environmentally sound choice for my next automobile. I have a lot to learn about costs, infrastructure needed, and driving range.
Food
Eat leftovers
Whenever I prepare a meal and there is food left I will eat it within 3 days.
Food
No meat or cheese
I will eat no meat or cheese.
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Advocate For More Food Options
Access to affordable, nutritious food is a food justice issue. I will advocate for local and/or organic food options in my state and/or community.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 10 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 10 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 5 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.
Climate
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local OrganizationsWhy is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?
Laura Cinat 4/29/2020 9:16 PMSupporting local business helps ensure that diverse businesses and stores are accessible to the community, makes the community more self-reliant, and cuts down on transportation and related energy consumption and cost. It also creates healthy human connection toons. -
Laura Cinat 4/28/2020 9:48 PMEnjoyed planting sunflower seeds today! We are thankful to be getting rain tonite to help them germinate. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Laura Cinat 4/28/2020 9:45 PMBecause pollinators are crucial to the security of our food supply, and the beauty of our flowering plants. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Laura Cinat 4/28/2020 9:43 PMYes, it rings true that time outdoors is important to spiritual and emotional development. Being outdoors connects you with all creation. Those connections are not adequately made when we are indoors most of the time. -
Laura Cinat 4/27/2020 4:38 PMThe challenge is going all right... a little slower today with back to work and back to school. Hoping to make a final push the next few days! -
Laura Cinat 4/26/2020 10:03 PMI joined the challenge to learn more from all of my teammates, and to challenge myself to increase awareness and action to restore health to Earth and improve our collective future! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Laura Cinat 4/26/2020 9:58 PMI regularly use paper towel because laundering cotton towels can get exhausting (though I use those too)! When I use paper towels I try to be thoughtful about it and not overconsume. In the last year I have also replaced regular toilet paper with toilet paper made from recycled paper or sustainably grown bamboo. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Laura Cinat 4/26/2020 9:54 PMWhenever possible I purchase seafood at grocers who screen suppliers to make sure they sustainably sourced and safe to eat. Checking labels and asking questions is important.
