Brendan's actions
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Forests
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 30 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to Earth
I will express my love and gratitude for our Earth by writing a love letter, poem, or song to Earth.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Brendan Davis 4/30/2020 7:17 AMVery fun challenge through the month! Made me more aware of some habits I am already following, and tried new ones! -
Brendan Davis 4/27/2020 8:34 AMTrying to keep a daily check-in on this challenge. Helps me to be more mindful each day for the environment! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
Brendan Davis 4/27/2020 8:31 AMSeems like a change from the Green Revolution that brought us more food yield and productivity. With trade impacts with COVID-19, perhaps we revisit the trade system. But the ability to have fruit and vegetables year-round is a great benefit to health. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Brendan Davis 4/27/2020 8:29 AMOnce I start the practice, I realize how easy it is to bring and use my own mug vs disposable and plastic cups. -
Brendan Davis 4/20/2020 11:20 AMThis is fun! Especially as it hits Earth Day week! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Brendan Davis 4/20/2020 11:20 AMOceans support a food protein source for me, and weather patterns. Reduce my use of plastic bags and packaging, and picking up litter so it doesn't get into our waterways (and eventually into the oceans). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Brendan Davis 4/20/2020 11:18 AMHad no idea how risky Eel was across the country! I'll monitor the site, especially before grabbing sushi next time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Brendan Davis 4/20/2020 11:17 AMWe need to spark our imagination and "look up" from the phones and get outside. My best experiences in nature have nothing to do with a phone or a TV. Even reading a book outside is way better! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Brendan Davis 4/13/2020 4:13 PMWith quarantine, I am walking daily for exercise and cabin-fever. I've noticed in the past most of my car trips are 1-2 miles, so I've been trying to batch travel, and explore biking to work.
