    Forests Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

Going on a walk or hike allows you to relax, get a breath of fresh air, and look at pretty sights. All of which can make you feel more connected with the outdoors and will make you realize just how important it is to preserve it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Research Benefits of Biodiversity
How can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?

I can encourage biodiversity by reducing my water use and not draining large amounts of water in my yard. This will help preserve native plants from being damaged from erosion created from the draining.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Mary Dixon's avatar
    Mary Dixon 4/15/2020 6:35 PM
It is more common for people in richer countries to eat more meat because it is considerably more accessible due to the industrialization of agriculture, Not only is a large amount of meat consumption harmful to your body it also affects others and the environment during farming processes.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate Local Climate Issues
In what ways is your local community resilient to shock events like we’ve experienced recently? How could you help it become more resilient?

Although the city of Asheville is considered to be located in one of the most shielded regions of the country, it is still prone to various natural events that are affected by climate change. In preparation for these events, Asheville encourages five steps that will help the building resilience of the city. These steps include; knowing the climate threats of your area, assessing the risk of them, investigating options to prevent or sustain the threat, and, last but not least, prioritizing and taking action.  I could help by spreading awareness and letting people know that it is going to become an even more common occurrence if no actions are taken.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Fresh Water Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?

I can advocate for those that have been harmed by not contributing to the production of plastic bottles or the exploitation of water sources. I can also tell others about the repercussions of bottled water and convince them to use renewable water bottles.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

I agree that people need the "natural world" in order to express and develop themselves. I believe that if a whole culture does not spend time outdoors it will show in their environmental impacts and their actions in life.
