DIY Local Clean-Up!

While organized clean up events have been trashed (pun intended) during the COVID-19 outbreak, this doesn't mean that you can't still help to improve your community's environmental health! Create your own local clean up by grabbing any garbage/plastic bags you have, your work/yard gloves, and getting outside to pick up litter! For more resources and ideas of how best to do this (while adhering to the CDC's guidelines for safety and social distancing), check out the links below!

I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.

Support Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 45 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

Finished our Earth Month with a vegan dinner—vegan barbacoa (made with lentils), homemade cabbage slaw and guacamole, and salsa canned at home from last summer’s harvest!

We just watched The Story of Plastic, which was available for a free screening through Eureka Recycling.  What a fantastic film!  I highly recommend checking it out, as well as this group: https://www.breakfreefromplastic.org/

Tomorrow's the big day--the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day!  What are you planning to do to celebrate?  My husband and I are hoping to get outside to clean our adopted storm drains and pick up litter.  It should be a beautiful day to get outside!

My husband and I watched Neyaab Nimamooman Mewinzha Gaa-inanjigeyaang, Regaining Food Sovereignty last night, which was one of the recommended documentaries on the food sovereignty challenge.  It was really interesting, particularly because it focused on indigenous groups in northern Minnesota.

It's a bit harder to find the litter under our new layer of snow from yesterday, but I managed to pick up some waste on the way to and from the mailbox this morning!

I'm continually uplifted by the love shown by neighbors toward one another during these turbulent times.  We went for a walk today and saw a series of signs ending with this...
