Advocate For More Packaging Options

Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

I believe we are globally hurting our planet due to overpopulating in many cities around the world. These highly/overpopulated areas need lots of food, transportation, energy, etc. which is draining the earth more everyday. I see it happening locally in my town because our town used to be covered in only corn fields in the early 2000s and now it has become a big town that has restaurants all over town and so many schools/neighborhoods. This has caused many people to move to this town and produce more business but also is consuming a lot of energy, food, transportation, etc. that damages our earth in the long run.

Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

Richer countries eat more meat than people because they have the income or money to have meat. Most countries don't have enough money for meat such as Venezuela who are currently barely able to even buy the animal's fat part due to the recession they are currently in. By eating more meat we can harm the planet with animal extinction that will mess with ecosystems surrounding our environment. Another way consuming meat affects our planet is deforestation. Deforestation allows farmers or companies to clear a forest to make way for livestock, along with methane emissions from cows and fertilizer use.

How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

I have walked to many places I have not previously been to. It was just areas near my neighborhood that I have always passed by or drove by but never necessarily walked to. I also purchased a bicycle and have been waking up early to bike before work and then returning in time to work from home. It provides me a good amount of exercise which allows me to let out stress. My gas tank has been pretty full for the past month without having to pump gas twice a week as I usually do, and I have walked to nearby gas stations and a nearby ice cream shop. Instead of highly contaminating the air with my car, I have lowered this by using my car less and biking/walking.

You see the whole world differently on a bike. Especially potholes and small hills.

How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

This activity was very important during this time of quarantine. I have done different forms of communication with my friends and family while social distancing. I have facetimed, zoomed, chatted, and netflix partied with my friends and family. It has been very helpful to stay connected and sane with just talking about your day or your future plans, etc. I stay in contact the most with my best friend who lives in Florida and while we both are social distancing we have managed to stay up to date everyday and have even done workout routines with one another during this time even if we are states away.

Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

I think this is true and there is so much beauty outdoors that can ease your mind which can reach out to your spiritual and emotional development. I personally enjoy my quiet time walking to a huge field next to my neighborhood that has lots of grass area and also a straight pebble driveway that allows me to distance myself from all the sounds around my neighborhood. I can hear birds and insects around me because it is so quiet and it eases my mind. I think of many stuff but it is stuff that can clear my head and it doesn't feel as stressful as one who is stressed when indoors all the time.  I think implications can be sound and vision, because I know I get tired of hearing TV or music in my household and my eyes get strained from working and doing school work on my computers especially during this quarantine time.
