  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

    Jana Fischback's avatar
    Jana Fischback 4/25/2020 12:23 PM
The amount of food we throw away is astonishing. I hadn't see the amount of money we lose before - maybe that's a way to get people to waste less? Sometimes putting a dollar amount on it is what it takes... I'd rather use that money to go toward my "Tesla account" :-)

$ does seem to be a "universal" language.
Facts like 80% of the world's deforestation is due to cattle ranching alone - etc. :( pale in comparison to the pocketbook.   Hmmmm . . .
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Jana Fischback's avatar
    Jana Fischback 4/17/2020 1:45 PM
Because meat is an expensive middle man - why not just eat the crops directly rather than feeding them to livestock? I stopped eating meat (land animals) after learning of the high GHG emissions from a report I did in grad school. Then I eventually gave up seafood, even though I love it, because of the over-fished oceans. Dairy is next - I need to give it up!

Jeanne talked me into trying Oat Milk - I like it and staying with it.  But I do love cheese!

Wow - good on you!  Chicken & cheese will be my very hardest to give up.  Great learning opportunities on this Eco-Challenge and I thank you Jana for making it possible!!

Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Jana Fischback's avatar
    Jana Fischback 4/10/2020 10:52 AM
Knowing they're all about taste rather than safety helps give me the confidence to depend on my own senses (sight, smell, then taste) to know if something is truly bad or just past it's prime.

I picked this challenge also - it's one I definitely want to understand more.  Wasting food is about the worst thing we can do.  May Grammy always said so too. :)

It is often said that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” What is your response to that statement?

    Jana Fischback's avatar
    Jana Fischback 4/01/2020 10:06 AM
"Don't do nothing just because you can't do everything." One of my favorite quotes. Maybe we can't feed the world with organic immediately (but maybe we can?) but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be working toward it for our health, the health of the ecosystems and the health of the agricultural and textile workers.
