Piper's actions
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 100 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 45 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 3 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 3 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 3 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Piper Kenney 4/22/2020 10:53 AM90% of our food is produced with the help of pollinators and if we loose them we loose our ability to feed ourselves. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Piper Kenney 4/13/2020 6:39 PMI learned about a bird called the Shrike, They gather food in the most interesting way. The are carnivorous and are famous for impaling larger prey such as rodents, lizards, and other birds on thorns or barbed wire to be eaten later. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
Piper Kenney 4/07/2020 9:22 AMI think it puts an emphasis on local and seasonal foods and the ability of a community or place to feed themselves without outside imports. -
Piper Kenney 4/05/2020 3:15 PMWhat do I do for the earth and what do I need to improve, all the challenge options on here give a great picture of what being earth friendly could look like and give you ideas for things to do while staying at home. -
Piper Kenney 4/03/2020 10:59 PMso far, this has been an a fun way to track all the things I can do as an individual to help the planet. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Piper Kenney 4/02/2020 12:46 PMI doesn't surprise me but it is shocking. I would save up that money for travel or education. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Piper Kenney 4/02/2020 12:36 PMI think especially now it indicates a disconnect from the natural world and food systems that support us. Being less connected to the world around us cause people to forget how deeply we rely on it and start thinking that we can overpower it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Piper Kenney 4/02/2020 12:34 PMIt allows me to feel less isolated and inspired by everyone's efforts during this time
