Gwen's actions
Climate
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 120 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 1 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 60 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Gwen Kirschke 4/06/2020 3:20 PMThis challenge has been interesting to interpret in the current stay-at-home/safer-at-home times. I have not been taking unnecessary car trips (or any car trips, most days), and while I often go on walks, these are not replacing car trips I would have otherwise made. As someone who, in other times, often walked to school, coffee shops, and to get groceries, I have always preferred walking to driving when possible, and I enjoy noticing so many things I would have blown by in a car, such as trees budding this time of year. However, I also live in an area where it is not feasible to walk/bike most places you need to go, and there is an incredibly minimal public transit system, requiring the use of cars for most trips. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Gwen Kirschke 4/06/2020 2:57 PMThe increase in video calling due to physical distancing inspired me to set up group video chats with a group of friends from a summer research program. It has been so sweet to interact with them regularly now, since we had only been texting each other since the program ended. In general, I am trying to use this time to figure out what uses of my time I really value, and which help me be happier and more focused, and these regular video chats are definitely one of those things.
