    How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Food (and pharmaceutical) waste harm the planet as well as waste money and the efforts to produce these products.  Now that I clearly understand the difference between use by, sell by and best by dates, I can make smarter decisions at home about "iffy" items in my cupboards.  In my extra time during COVID-19, I have tidied my pantry and moved all items expiring in 2020 to one side to be sure they are used in a timely manner.  While shelf stable items are safe after the printed dates, they are more flavorful and appealing before their "deadline".  If an item won't get used "in time" I can donate it to a food pantry.  Giving it before it "expires" shows respect for the recipient.

    Thanks, Erin, for inviting me to join this challenge!  I am so happy to have focused on daily actions that are becoming habits that will continue after the challenge concludes.  Next steps for me will include political action.  My personal actions certainly matter but large scale change is essential to saving our beautiful planet Earth!

    How does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?

    I am grateful to be on the board of directors of the Family Nurturing Center, a relief nursery, preschool, parent education, family support and child abuse prevention organization.  This time of enforced isolation is particularly challenging for parents recovering from drug abuse, domestic violence and, often still grappling with the abuse they suffered when they were children.  Everyone at FNC is working extra hard to assist with basic needs, help parents cope and keep children safe.

      What wonderful work you are doing Penny. I have had a few friends asking if I knew of anyone who just needed a hot meal dropped off at their home. I know that doesn't fix any of these problems, but if a gesture of kindness might be helpful, please let me know. I will pass along the message.

    I am really enjoying this eco challenge!  Thanks, Erin, for inviting me to join.  The weather today was SO BEAUTIFUL that I spent extra lots of time outdoors.  I genuinely wish we were getting more "April Showers" but since we aren't, I am savoring the sunshine.  When the clouds return I will post my photo and other things that will add to our team points.  I love living in Southern Oregon and want to help keep it beautiful.

    Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    I grew up always preferring being inside to being outside.  I have to battle that inclination nearly every day, but as soon as I get outdoors, I am SO HAPPY to be there!  After yard work during the day today, I went on a twilight walk with my dog.  The air was cool and so clean after the day's rain.  It was lovely!

    An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

    I think I am pretty careful, but I know that I still waste food due to overly enthusiastic shopping, changes in plans and occasional carelessness.  Devoting that money to anything other than waste would be an improvement!!!

    Richer people can afford more meat than those of lesser means.  Eating more meat releases more emissions into our atmosphere and degrades more land/soil.
