Barbara's actions
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 12 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Climate
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 1 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Food
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 60 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Barbara Kviz 4/10/2020 5:31 AMWe watched the documentary on PBS Frontline called Plastic Wars. The 60 minute documentary is available to watch on YouTube. I’ve been close to the Recycling industry for years and it was still shocking to see how we have been mislead about Recycling plastics. -
Barbara Kviz 4/10/2020 5:22 AMWe have been receiving 3 meals a week from Hello Fresh. Usually there are leftovers for lunch the next day. This helps us with minimizing trips to the store and minimizes food waste. The meals include ingredients for only what is needed for that meal. The meals give us a variety of choices for flavors and foods we may not usually make and are like going out to eat! -
Barbara Kviz 4/10/2020 5:15 AMEvery day we take a walk outside in our local park or cemetery. We are bird watchers so there are birds starting to migrate or come back through our area. The British call bird watchers “twitchers”! This week we saw a yellow bellied sapsucker, Brown thrasher, Louisiana water thrush, and heard eastern towhee’s. We saw several ducks at duck hollow on the Mon including wood ducks, grebes, and buffleheads.
