Shannan's actions
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 60 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to Earth
I will express my love and gratitude for our Earth by writing a love letter, poem, or song to Earth.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Food
Mindful Eating
I will eat at least one(1) meal per day without distractions (phone, book, laptop, etc.) and will take the time necessary to enjoy and express gratitude for the food I eat.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 20 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco TipsWhat environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?
Shannan Leitner 4/29/2020 9:44 AMI have most recently been focusing on reducing my food waste. One of the ways that I am working to that is by saving all of my veggie scraps like kale stems, onion skin & offcuts, etc. for homemade veggie stock, plus by making my own veggie stock I can avoid all of the packaging that comes along with veggie stock from the grocery store. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local OrganizationsWhy is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?
Shannan Leitner 4/29/2020 9:42 AMSupporting local businesses and organizations is extremely important because it helps create a wonderful community. Local businesses, most of them at least, are passionate about providing for the community they are in rather than other things like profit that large corporations are fixed on. Supporting local businesses and organizations creates a more resilient community because it builds up the network or people who are invested in helping the community thrive whereas large corporations would rather have their own company thrive over the community(ties) they are in. -
Shannan Leitner 4/28/2020 8:44 PMToday n my walk to and from Scoop I noticed so many vibrant flowers blooming like poppies, magnolias, marigolds, bluebells, and so many others, they were all so beautiful! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to EarthWhat are you grateful for about our planet? Share what you created or your general thoughts of love and gratitude with everyone else!
Shannan Leitner 4/22/2020 7:48 PMI make a small drawing in my journal and wrote down some thoughts about the Earth. Even though it was grey and rainy today I sat outside and observed, that is one of the things I love about Earth, observing the Earth never gets boring for me, it always feels new and magical.-
Flora Wright 4/22/2020 8:23 PMI agree! The earth is insane and beautiful and unbelievable. I wrote a poem.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
Shannan Leitner 4/15/2020 9:58 AMFood sovereignty works to transform our food system in such a way that both people and the planet are able to benefit without corporations like Monsanto even being in the picture. It is all about creating a food system that heals people spiritually, mentally, and physically, giving us a much-needed connection to our food as food is a huge component of most if not all cultures on Earth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Shannan Leitner 4/13/2020 8:40 AMI totally agree with that, I think that our connection with the environment around us is extremely important. I think that in the world we live in today, where it is normal in most places around the globe to be indoors and have little to no connection to the land, it is extremely detrimental to us because humans are not separate from the natural world, we are a part of it, and if we do not create a connection it leaves many of us feeling lost and unhappy in life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Shannan Leitner 4/11/2020 11:05 PMI love learning about plants and teaching others about plants when it comes to addressing the climate crisis which carries with it many ecological problems. One of the main reasons why I am so fascinated by and interested in plants is because I love cooking and I eat fully plant-based so overtime plants have become a huge part of my life without me even realizing it for a while. I'm looking into studying botany and horticulture in the future as well as permaculture. Plants are such an important part of Earth and I hope that everyone reading this takes a second right now to appreciate and express gratitude for all of the plants that sustain you whether it be categorically, as shelter, as decoration, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Shannan Leitner 4/11/2020 1:35 PMI researched salamanders and I learned that there are hundreds of species of salamander. Salamanders are amphibians and are almost a combination of a frog and lizard. They have super cool limb regeneration abilities kind of like starfish and other animals do. Unfortunately though, many if not most salamander species are threatened or endangered, this is especially bad because often times in ecosystems amphibians can be telling to the health of the ecosystem as a whole so if we are seeing a decline and/or extinction of amphibians like salamanders than it is almost certain that the same will happen with mammals, reptiles, etc.
