Wildlife

Research Benefits of Biodiversity

I will spend at least 15 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Support Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

I encourage biodiversity by keeping plants that support pollinators and trying to conserve habitat loss by composting and recycling.  More importantly, introducing the sense of wonder that nature brings to our young generation will likely install values that the world is worth caring for.

Pollinators add billions of dollars to the global economy by providing their services to a great many of the flowering plants that provide the food that we eat.  The agricultural industry could not do without them.

Green anole lizard in my palm tree.  Recently, an invasive species has put some pressure on our natives.  What effect does this have on the biodiversity of the region?

The green anoles have existed in North America for 6 million years, but the brown species was recently introduced through trade explains Simon Lailvaux, a professor of biology at the University of New Orleans

The free Sunday edition of the Times Picayune that I received this morning has a good article on how to "Remedy your home-bound blues by watching butterflies flicker".
