Action Track: Earth Day Together!

Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips

Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Fresh Water

Eco-friendly Gardening

I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Forests

Explore My Area

I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Building Resilience

Research Benefits of Biodiversity

I will spend at least 15 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food

Start a Garden

I chose to start a garden at my house. My goal is to grow more of my own food, so that I don't have to drive to the grocery store all of the time to buy vegetables. And, the fresh produce will taste delicious and be good for my heath :)

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food

Compost Food Waste

I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

People

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 2 hour(s) in my community helping people who are most at need right now, including elderly and immunocompromised people, people without childcare, and people whose jobs have been affected by social distancing measures.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

People

Spend Time Outside

I will replace 10 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Oceans

Advocate For More Packaging Options

Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Fresh Water

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Reduce Animal Products

I will enjoy 3 meatless meal(s) and/or 3 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Fresh Water

Conserve Toilet Water

I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Support Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 20 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food

Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates

I will spend at least 15 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

What a quick month! I didn't always do the best job checking in, but it was nice to have some form of accountability, and I enjoyed getting to learn some new things along the way. I hope this challenged has helped folks create some new habits that they will continue sustaining beyond Earth Month.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Fresh Water Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?

    Kaitlyn Meyer 4/30/2020 7:41 PM
I think the biggest thing I can do is to protest things companies as much as possible, and bring a reusable water bottle wherever I go. I can also encourage others to use reusable water bottles, and encourage companies/organizations not to offer them as well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    People Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    Kaitlyn Meyer's avatar
    Kaitlyn Meyer 4/30/2020 7:40 PM
Yes. I think that we have less motivation to take care of nature because we don't feel very connected to it, don't necessarily understand why it's important or what's at risk, and we're probably more likely to abuse it without realizing it, unfortunately :(
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
What environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?

    Kaitlyn Meyer's avatar
    Kaitlyn Meyer 4/30/2020 7:38 PM
Most recently, I have started turning off the water while washing my hands for 20 seconds. To be successful in this, I need to be going about my day more consciously instead of on autopilot.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Research Benefits of Biodiversity
How can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?

    Kaitlyn Meyer's avatar
    Kaitlyn Meyer 4/30/2020 7:36 PM
I can advocate for the protection of natural spaces and endangered species, I can plant a garden, I can support farmers who plant a wide variety of crops and avoid farmers who monocrop.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    People Volunteer in my Community
How does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?

    Kaitlyn Meyer's avatar
    Kaitlyn Meyer 4/27/2020 6:18 PM
It makes me feel more connected to my community, and it makes me want to be more a part of my community.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Support Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

    Kaitlyn Meyer's avatar
    Kaitlyn Meyer 4/27/2020 6:17 PM
From a selfish perspective, it's important because 1/3 of the foods we eat depends on them for pollination! And I like eating :) From a less selfish perspective, it's important because they are living creatures that deserve to live their own life, and they are a part of ecosystems that depend on them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Oceans Advocate For More Packaging Options
What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Kaitlyn Meyer's avatar
    Kaitlyn Meyer 4/27/2020 6:16 PM
I'm concerned that we aren't going to have a healthy planet to live on. I'm concerned that we will have food shortages due to unpredictable fluctuation in weather patterns/events. I'm concerned about species dying that play vital roles in our ecosystem, and also that bring so much beauty to life.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Fresh Water Eco-friendly Gardening
What are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

    Kaitlyn Meyer's avatar
    Kaitlyn Meyer 4/27/2020 6:14 PM
Drought, flooding (poor water drainage setup, especially in San Jose and on mountain roads), access
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Fresh Water Conserve Toilet Water
What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

    Kaitlyn Meyer 4/27/2020 6:12 PM
Whew.. that's a tough one, since California produces so much of the country's and world's produce.. but I think having recycled water everywhere would greatly help, as well as utilizing farming practices that don't require so much water. Additionally, more people growing their own food would put less pressure on the land here to grow so much food year-round.
