Alan's actions
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 60 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 10 hour(s) in my community helping people who are most at need right now, including elderly and immunocompromised people, people without childcare, and people whose jobs have been affected by social distancing measures.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 4 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Alan Michaels 4/29/2020 12:54 PMI agree with this statement. We need to connect with natural beauty. Any outdoor activity, such as running, taking a hike, gardening, or walking the dog, are necessary to connect with nature and recognize its wonder. Spending time indoors is fine, but people need to get outside to feel like they are a part of something bigger than their homes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Alan Michaels 4/29/2020 12:50 PMWalking or riding a bike helps me to engage my local community on a closer scale. I see neighbors, stop, and talk briefly. While in a motor vehicle, I am enclosed and often alone with my own thoughts. Walking and running allows me to see members of my local community and connect. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Alan Michaels 4/29/2020 12:46 PMI am more engaged with my community by volunteering, and am more invested. By volunteering, I have built personal connections with younger people and our environment. With these connections, I have a greater interest in the well-being of my community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Alan Michaels 4/29/2020 12:40 PMYes, it helps. I appreciate hearing experiences from other perspectives. I learn about different means other people employ to help others within their communities. I empathize with similar and dissimilar situations and impacts felt that may be greater than my own.
