Action Track: Building Resilience

Support Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

Bringing home unique souvenirs from trips you’ve enjoyed is meaningful, and giving people unique gifts from other places is fun. Seek souvenirs and gifts that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates

I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.

Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations

I will spend 60 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.

Research a Wild Animal

I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).

I can feel assured that food is safe to eat and reduce the amount I throw away. I actually in practice only toss something if it has mold growing on it, smells awful or tastes terrible!

People Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
Why is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?

The organizations that I researched cover issues of sustainability and land preservation and conservation quite comprehensively. I feel like my financial contributions are more tangible than those donations to national organizations (which I also support) and connect me with like-minded individuals in my community.

I was picking up trash on an empty lot across an alley from the studio of one of our local artists, when the artist himself, Gary, came out to say hello and thank me for helping him the lot trash-free. Apparently the woman who owns the lot never cleans it up herself, so it’s up to Gary to do the dirty work. We hadn’t seen each other for quite awhile, so I made a connection with a friend as well as tidying up the neighborhood!
