Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Climate
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.

REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Advocate For More Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Tiffany Porter 4/30/2020 5:05 PMWe are a very wasteful society. Things aren’t even made to last very long anymore either. Things are changing, but not as fast as they need to be. They need to change more, faster locally as well as globally. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Tiffany Porter 4/24/2020 4:31 PMI learned coyotes are extremely smart, clever animals that often outsmart humans at every turn. I learned it’s hard to find a balance on how to deal with them as well as live with them. Farmers have issues with coyotes eating their lambs, and city people think they are adorable and want to play with them. It’s finding this balance of cohabitating that apparently we aren’t clever enough to figure out, -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Tiffany Porter 4/24/2020 3:50 PMBeing outside is a life saver. You’re out in the open, the kids can run around and you can recenter. The weather alone can elevate your mood. You just feel better to be outside. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Tiffany Porter 4/18/2020 2:17 PMThey are such an important part of our ecosystem! Our food production really relies on them. Plus, wouldn’t it be better to have a colorful yard all year long instead of having to mow the lawn, thus creating a food desert for these creatures that are so important to our food production? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Tiffany Porter 4/10/2020 3:58 PMI’ve thoroughly enjoyed biking, running and exploring again. We found a zip line that was around the corner! -
Tiffany Porter 4/03/2020 9:20 AMFrom my favorite newsletter Heated today:
In the last two weeks alone, the plastics industry—which is part of the fossil fuel industry—successfully lobbied several states to bring back single-use plastic bags. The National Mining Association asked the White House to let it stop paying into the Black Lung Disability Trust Fund..And today, to top it all off, several oil and gas executives are meeting at the White House, because they want the next coronavirus relief package to include bailout provisions.
Now is a good time to be calling your representatives urging them to fight for us with everything they can. This is just one aspect of the many things going on today.
