Dorna's actions
Forests
Choose Better Wood Products
I will only purchase wood and paper products from ecologically certified sources like Forest Stewardship Council.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Fresh Water
Water-Friendly Beauty Products
Avoid beauty products with micro beads or harsh chemicals that will feed into the ground and your water supply.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 3 hour(s) in my community helping people who are most at need right now, including elderly and immunocompromised people, people without childcare, and people whose jobs have been affected by social distancing measures.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Wildlife
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
Bringing home unique souvenirs from trips you’ve enjoyed is meaningful, and giving people unique gifts from other places is fun. Seek souvenirs and gifts that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Dorna Schroeter 4/16/2020 5:53 AMWe eat cod or mahi-mahi twice a month for both protection against too much mercury and sustainable practices. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Choose Better Wood ProductsBeyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?
Dorna Schroeter 4/16/2020 5:43 AMFood, shade, biodiversity, shelter and homes for animals and plants, higher evaporation rates than other cover types which provide for hydration of the atmosphere, evapo-transpiration which is when a forest catches falling rain, evaporates it and causes rain precipitation elsewhere, -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Forest-Friendly FoodsHow difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Dorna Schroeter 4/08/2020 6:14 AMNot too hard as I have been very aware of this for a while. We just finished the last jar of Nutella, a gift that someone had given me over a year ago. My elderly mother who lives with us still likes PAM, but I got her to switch over to their coconut spray. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Eco-friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Dorna Schroeter 4/07/2020 4:42 PMWe experience both flooding and drought. I start using my rain barrels to collect water in early spring because inevitably we will have no rain for weeks at least one point over the summer. -
Dorna Schroeter 4/06/2020 6:53 PMSo glad we have a law banning plastic shopping bags. But we must go a step further and ban those clear plastic produce bags! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Dorna Schroeter 4/04/2020 6:27 PMWe are a small community and it brings us together! The community is no longer "it", but us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Dorna Schroeter 4/04/2020 5:21 AMI am looking forward to making my property as well as Rhinebeck part of the pollinator pathway! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Dorna Schroeter 4/04/2020 5:20 AMI am involved in a project which is using the frog. Here are some fun frog facts that some may not know;
Frogs don’t drink water – they soak it into their body through their skin. They breathe through the nose and their skin.Their eyeballs assist them in swallowing food – they push the food down their throat by pushing down the eyeballs.Their vision field is almost 360° so they can see all that is around them all the time!A group of eggs is called a frogspawn.A group of frogs is called an army. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Dorna Schroeter 4/04/2020 5:15 AM"To live on the land, we must learn from the sea." A line from John Denver's song, Calypso that has long inspired me. Earth is what it is because of our oceans: food, oxygen, temperature and climate regulation, weather, carbon absorption. Earth looks like a blue pearl from outer space because of our oceans! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Dorna Schroeter 4/04/2020 5:11 AMWe lightly wet a rag, wipe all the dishes and then put them in the dishwasher!
