REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
Channing Shives 4/05/2020 6:25 PMFood sovereignty addresses how the transition to modern food systems led to land being monopolized under corporations as opposed to cultivated by individual peoples. This shift was damaging due to the lack of nutrients now mass-produced/consumed and any cultural ties to diet being broken. Dependency on the modern food system has vastly increased disease and the notion of food as medicine has been largely lost. -

Channing Shives 4/03/2020 10:22 AMNot only to keep our natural ecosystems thriving but also bc it is estimated that a third of the food that we consume each day relies on pollination mainly by bees! I also learned that we are coming up on "Swarming season" but do not fear if you come accross a swarmed hive, etc as bees are much less interested in stinging during this time and more interested in finding a safe warm place to rest with their honey. Apparently you should call a local beekeeper to remove them. TMYK! -

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Channing Shives 4/01/2020 2:47 PMI used this time to learn about Gophers... Though not the most majestic of beasts, there seems to be one inhabiting my new front lawn. I thought I should to get to know my new neighbor. I learned that they live their entire lives underground, barely even coming up to forage for food as they survive mostly on roots and tubers. They can burrow up to 6 ft deep! And last but not least are listed as "least concern" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resource's Red List of Threatened Species.. for those that were concerned lol -

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Channing Shives 4/01/2020 12:28 PMI find this saddening but not necessarily surprising :( It's so easy to throw out food that goes bad without a second thought and much harder to stick to concrete plans of ONLY what is needed when we are at the grocery store. It can be hard to define quantity needs especially when you have a family/others to care for. Ideally, money saved could be used to further publicize education on similar topics, create sustainable homes, or donated to families on the opposite end of the spectrum.
