Food
Growing and Eating Local Food
Let's share photos about food grown in Boulder County! These can be photos of production (local farms or backyard gardens), preparation, or enjoying the bounty from our fields and freezers!
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Kayann Short 4/29/2020 1:28 PMToday's sunshine is making me smile. Humans are in a mess right now, no doubt, but working with the earth's natural systems instead of against them, we can find a way to a more just and sustainable world. Don't give up! Let nature be your guide and keep Earth Day in mind every day, all year long!

Kayann Short 4/27/2020 10:26 AMToday is a gorgeous spring day near the foothills of the St Vrain watershed. Perennial plants are slowly making their appearance at our farm. I'm grateful that the earth continues to give us food like this lovage, a plant that can be used like celery for stir fries or as a flavoring in soups. Stalks and leaves are edible! A wonderful, hardy plant for Earth Day gardens--and beautiful, too!

Kayann Short 4/26/2020 1:12 PMBetween the pandemic and the cooler than usual spring, this season hasn't had a normal start. But with global warming, "normal" isn't a word we use much for farming anymore. All the more reason to celebrate Earth Day and show our appreciation for the gifts of the planet. -
Kayann Short 4/26/2020 1:08 PMYoung deer nibbling grass--and not rhubarb, the leaves of which are mildly toxic. Deer also avoid daffodils--but love to snack on tulips.

Kayann Short 4/22/2020 9:24 AMHappy 50th Earth Day, everyone! Our bees are active today with all the dandelions blooming. I am thankful for the lesson of cleaner air, even while regretting the difficulty of how we're learning it. We can have a more sustainable future if we keep working toward it. Here's a newspaper clipping from my 5th grade class's First Earth Day project and some stickers from 50 years ago. I have a video about our class effort at https://vimeo.com/125382523 Have a safe Earth Day and thanks for keeping Earth Day going in these crazy times.

Kayann Short 4/21/2020 7:14 AMI'm loving the bright morning sun on this day before Earth Day! With all the moisture from last week's big snowstorms, the crops in the field are ready for some sunshine! For me, the new appreciation for local food during the pandemic is also a legacy of the first Earth Day's advocacy for keeping local land in agricultural production. Fifty years later, we're reaping the benefits of community-supported farms! -
Kayann Short 4/20/2020 10:13 AMTwo pictures for today: brassicas in the greenhouse ready for the cold frame and bees working the dandelions! Yay, sunshine!
