Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 02 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 005 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 000000001 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 015 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Jyotsna Sivaguru 4/30/2020 2:25 PMFood waste bothers me, both as an equity issue and as a sustainability issue. I am always looking for ways to improve our use of the food we buy, both in terms of using all parts of the produce we buy, or to plan and buy what we need , can freezer for later use. The money spent on wasted food could be used instead to buy food for someone in need.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco TipsWhat environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?
Jyotsna Sivaguru 4/28/2020 7:49 PMIn an effort to reduce packaging, we are trying to buy more of our staples in bulk, reuse existing plastic & glass containers for storage and being mindful about the packaging used in anything we buy. I had to learn to be happy with smaller steps that we took as a family, rather than going all-out; which can be overwhelming and throw us off course. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Jyotsna Sivaguru 4/28/2020 7:43 PMBeing outside invigorates me, even if it is a short walk at the end of the day. I love seeing my neighbors, looking at their gardens and always come back refreshed.
