Izzy Wang 4/15/2020 10:22 AMi just read a climate change in the Pacific Northwest overview and the very scientific descriptions of sea level rise and destruction of livable salmon habitat definitely increased my sense of urgency and makes me want to shout it from the rooftops every day.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Izzy Wang 4/14/2020 6:38 PMI can plant pollinator-friendly plants in my yard and create a safe space for backyard buddies (frogs, birds, snakes, mice, etc.). I can also advocate for the protection and proper introduction of larger species by calling representatives and lobbying Olympia. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Izzy Wang 4/14/2020 11:21 AMThis has been more than true for me. I have grown in countless ways and discovered thousands of things about myself after spending quality time in the great outdoors. Personally, I believe that the natural world holds the keys to many of our most primal secrets, and is host to a powerful energy that binds us to the Earth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Izzy Wang 4/13/2020 8:45 PMOverall, I'm a relatively independent person in that I can be happy spending long periods of time alone. Even so, I find myself wanting to be with other people, whether that means talking about life, having a spontaneous adventure, or just sitting in silence. Connecting with others and bouncing ideas of each other gives me a sense of perspective for the experiences of worlds beyond my own. This is especially helpful in times like these, where my inner world is all-consuming. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Izzy Wang 4/13/2020 8:38 PMSpending time outdoors, especially when the weather is really nice, makes me appreciate the natural world and my easy access to it so much! Even just sitting in the sun and taking deep breaths fills me with an indescribable gratitude for the place, the time, and the stillness. It also makes me think of all the people and cultures, the lives and the experiences the land has witnessed and will continue to witness long after I am gone. Deep peace -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Izzy Wang 4/08/2020 10:20 PMBecause they are so so essential to our food systems and ecosystems! I learned that flies, birds, bats, and beetles are equally important pollinators as bees and butterflies. Also, flies are attracted to stinky smelling flowers ONLY!! -
