Beverly's actions
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 60 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Beverly Wedda 4/30/2020 7:55 PMI've again enjoyed this year's eco challenge. While I wasn't checking in as consistently as I would have liked to, I again learned a lot in the resources I looked at, and have a list of more I want to look into. While COVID19 restrictions helped this, I've really enjoyed only getting in my car to go to and from work now. I'd rather be taking the bus, but right now driving my electric vehicle seems like a safer and reasonable option. While we haven't yet planted an eco friendly garden at our home, we are working with a master gardener to create plans, and will be doing so in the fall. The eco challenge was supportive in moving us along in this goal we've had. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Beverly Wedda 4/30/2020 7:51 PMI researched a couple of my favorite animals with the time I allotted to this activity, and even a couple more. A couple of my favorites are otters and red tailed hawks. I learned how the otter anatomy makes them powerful swimmers, and how they crack open shellfish to eat them. I have a better understanding of the wingspan of the red tailed hawk, and where they like to hang out to watch for prey. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Beverly Wedda 4/30/2020 7:46 PMOceans are a big part of the carbon cycle, and they contribute to temperature regulation. I didn't realize they were 70% of our surface. I need to keep doing my part to keep various forms of pollution out of our oceans. -
Beverly Wedda 4/26/2020 6:42 PMIt's so rewarding to spend the entire weekend not having gotten into a car to drive anywhere! And today was a great day to take a bike ride over to check on our plantings at Briggs Ave. Community Garden too! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Beverly Wedda 4/26/2020 6:39 PMIn my current role on the board of directors for our HOA community, I can continue to encourage that we make decisions and take actions that support ecosystem biodiversity. And in our own home's foundation planting area, we can continue to work toward a diversity of native plants to support different types of pollinators, and introduce practices to support improved soil health. -
Beverly Wedda 4/21/2020 7:39 PMGot another bikeride to our community garden plot today to check on our newest plantings as of Saturday (tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant), and to secure the tomato cages some more. Beautiful day. I started reading on the importance of biodiversity last night - but may not pick that back up until tomorrow. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Beverly Wedda 4/16/2020 7:28 PMWithout the contributions of our pollinators, we'll see reduction and disappearance of our fruits, vegetables, and plants. Eventually, we wouldn't survive. And besides that, they help maintain beauty in our environments. -
Beverly Wedda 4/16/2020 7:17 PMAppreciating another day that I didn't need to drive anywhere, and got lots of time outdoors on foot. -
Beverly Wedda 4/14/2020 7:32 PMNo need to drive anywhere today - love these days! -
Beverly Wedda 4/14/2020 7:31 PMConsulted local gardener for advice on planting native pollinators in our home's foundation planting bed. Very exciting.
