    People Connect While Social Distancing
How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

Connecting with others is so important. Today I sent a video to our companies volunteers for appreciation. it was a group effort video that is sent not only for appreciation but to stay connected and say "we care".
I sent cards to co-workers who are not able to connect via email or internet.

    Climate Choose LED Bulbs
Changing lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?

Encourage others to do the same.  Share ideas, and share where to get resources that support actions.

Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

I have become more aware of the labeling on products and only buy fish that meets the guidelines.

As restaurants open up and I venture out to eat and restaurants, asking questions or researching for good options before I go out will help.

How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?

My daughter and I did a clean up project. it was not an official project but we extended the invite to others to do as well.  Our goal was to clean up a beach front. While we were busy collecting garbage, a young girl was watching. My daughter and I were talking, laughing and enjoying what we were doing. We noticed the young girl watching, and with her parents permission, asked if she wanted to help us. Her face just lit up. She was happy to help, and so were we.
Working together gets a better job done, and creates a feeling of community!

Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Lynn Wilding's avatar

I try to limit my trips to the grocery store. I plan my meals and know I can purchase products that have a closer expiration or use by date for the meals that will be prepared soon and go for the longer period for foods that I know will last longer.

Knowing the difference between use by and sell by help make those decisions and extend food life.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

    Lynn Wilding's avatar
    Lynn Wilding 4/25/2020 11:13 AM
Spending excess money on food does not surprise me. For most people, eating is a "hobby" and not for necessity. Often times I bought way more food than I needed and was so disappointed with the waste, or eating food I really did not enjoy or need. Meal planning has allowed me to purchase only what I need for meals.

I would rather see the money go to supporting farmers.

We are working hard on this as a family. We've also started home composting so that when we do have waste, I at least know it's going back into our garden!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

Being outdoors every day can awaken all of your senses. When outdoors you can hear noise and you can hear peace all at the same time. You can see growth, colors, and new beginnings. You can touch many different textures and connect through touch.

If we do not go outdoors, we cannot be aware of the changes taking place. Sometimes those changes need our support to prevent or develop.

We've been able to hear and notice so much more outdoors as a result of the quieter surroundings (less car and plane traffic). It's certainly been a positive during this time!

Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

Pollinators are so important to protecting and sustaining habitats. They are the key to all survival.
