Grow your own Food

Every day we will tend to our garden to learn about how to grow food and to reduce the carbon footprint of our meals

DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Building Resilience

Support Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 25 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate

Watched Documentary on Renewable Energy

We watched a documentary calling Dream Big, about engineering and how it can help people in need. We learned about renewable energy, which is energy that you can re use without running out, like solar. We saw cars that were powered by solar energy. We also learned that cities, if they are not built correctly can collapse, and that in the future most of the people will live in cities and so they need to be designed more efficiently, with trees, playgrounds, and gardens.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

It was very eye opening to see how much food goes in the trash. By the end of week two or maybe three (whos counting anymore) of composting we had filled a large composting bin, probably the size of several garbage bags. As we have begun a vegetable garden, we hope this compost will be ready by the end of the summer for our autumn crops. Fingers crossed!

  • We added a challenge today, grow your own food, as we have started preparing our garden to grow our favorite vegetables. That way, the vegetables wont have to be driven from their farm to the store, and we wont have to use gas driving to the grocery store to buy them.

  • We are feeling a little tired of the options available and wondering if there is a more extensive selection that we are for some reason not seeing? Is anyone else feeling like the challenges are somewhat limited?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Support Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

It is important to take care of pollinators because Bees are responsible for pollinating the flowers which produce a third or more of the food we eat.  Also bees are a bellwether species, which indicate if the environment is healthy or not. When we put poison on the plants, we not only poison the bees, but we poison ourselves through the water, soil, and air. When the water, soil and air are polluted, not only are people affected, but also all the animals including turtles, dogs, deer, and bears.

  • We watched a documentary calling Dream Big, about engineering and how it can help people in need. We learned about renewable energy, which is energy that you can re use without running out, like solar. We saw cars that were powered by solar energy. Action Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social Distancing
How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

it makes me have more fun-Grace
it makes us silly  and crazy. we  get to talk about our feelings it helps us remember our friends outside of quarantine
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

When we stay inside all day we feel crummy, bored, and start fighting with each other. After spending time outside outdoors we had fun, we feel free, more focused on our drawings, and no one is fighting and screaming.and when we went on a walk a red tailed hawk flew right in front of us which made us feel relaxed, excited, amazed, and surprised.if we were indoors we would have never seen it and felt those feelings. it was really special that we got to see that. if no one ever went outside to see special things like that we would all be bored and stupid and never feel feelings like that.

  • We are April, Lemoni, and Grace  and we love to play out side and like to garden. Our dad comes from Brazil, and teaches us to love the earth. We want to pick up trash, garden, and help the animals.
