Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 3 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 3 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 5 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Food
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Eco-friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Patricia Brady 4/08/2020 7:53 PMHere in No. California droughts can be a yearly challenge ,, to combat this we eliminated a lawn from our rear yard and installed pea gravel and stepping stones interspersed with shrubs and large cobbles and boulders ,, all shrubs and trees are on a low drip system.-
Mary Jane Eustace 4/13/2020 8:37 AMHere are the pics from your home in Chico, in Northern California. Later I'll post a few from my visit with you in Walnut Creek, just east of San Francisco. -

Patricia Brady 4/06/2020 1:39 PMMy challenge is going with ease and enthusiasm knowing, in a small way, that I am making a difference.-
Mary Jane Eustace 4/09/2020 12:22 PMThanks for sharing, Aunt Pat. I, too, am finding some challenges. One is making sure I check in and comment every day. Amazing how the day can slip by without me noticing!
And it is also a challenge for me to go "with ease and enthusiasm." Sometimes it feels like, what's the point? And sometimes it feels stressful or isolating because many of my friends and family don't share my perspective. But I tried to keep in the forefront a couple things I've learned over the years. One, make choices from my values, not my feelings. And two, I am in "integrity" when my intentions, words, and actions are in alignment.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Patricia Brady 4/01/2020 10:04 AMI began recycling our food waste two years ago when our local recycling company provided a “recycle smart organic” container that combines our yard waste (grass clippings, etc) with food waste rather than food waste going to our landfills.-
Mary Jane Eustace 4/01/2020 12:38 PMThat's great! I know that there are organic waste pick up companies that serve some communities here in Western Mass. I don't know if there are any in my community (Springfield) but I'm going to look for some. I compost kitchen waste but my bins get full sometimes before decomposing. It would be great if I had somewhere to send the extra food waste.
