Parker's actions
Climate
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Parker Brock 4/13/2020 12:55 PMIs there a way to reset your challenges? Are one-time challenges not able to be reset?-
Liz Wimmer 4/15/2020 7:44 AMHi Parker - I think once you complete the one-time challenges, those are marked as completed. I unfortunately wasn't able to find anything about this in the FAQ https://ecochallenge.org/faqs/. I haven't completed mine yet, so will let you know if I find out otherwise.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Parker Brock 4/09/2020 11:20 AMStores have started to not allow reusable bags, so I suppose paper is the better choice if available. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Parker Brock 4/09/2020 11:17 AMWhy do you need plastic for your produce? They get thoroughly washed before you eat them anyway! Reduce whereever possible -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Parker Brock 4/06/2020 3:12 PMYou can take in the sights, but also your other senses like smell and touch. And observing and listening brings about greater attention to detail. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Parker Brock 4/03/2020 3:18 PMThe red fox is not listed as a threatened species, and actually force arctic foxes out of their natural habitat. The biggest of the fox species -
