Richard's actions
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 2 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 5 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 20 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Wildlife
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Get Involved in the Water Justice Movement
I will spend at least 30 minutes a day using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 2 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Eco-friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Richard Chen 4/07/2020 9:51 PMThe most prominent water concerns in my area are drought problems and water pollution. In previous years, big medical companies would pollute the water and lands like landfills would pollute the water source. However, in recent years, that got a lot better. The only problem is drought, probably caused by global warming. This is reason why I am taking actions against climate change, so that my community can be protected.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Richard Chen 4/03/2020 1:05 PMTalking about what I am troubled about with someone else helps me to release stress and solve the problem. I want to talk with more people so I can help them like the way connecting with others will help me. -
Richard Chen 4/02/2020 6:02 PMI really like all the challenges I accept to do. Not only do they serve the purpose of protecting the environment, but I also learned many additional pieces of knowledge about ways to protect the environment and about nature itself. I will continue to do all my challenges and do my best to encourage others to do the same. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Richard Chen 4/02/2020 5:58 PMBecause the som ecosystem's biodiversity requires pollinators. The pollinators would increase the gene pool and increase the survival rate of many plants.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Richard Chen 4/02/2020 5:57 PMI would post blogs and write articles on how biodiversity is one of the most important factors of maintaining an ecosystem. Without biodiversity, disasters like successions would completely destroy and eliminate many ecosystems, which would in turn hurt both the environment and our society. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Richard Chen 4/02/2020 5:55 PMI can get to know places around me better and gain experience about where I should exercise in the future. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Forest-Friendly FoodsHow difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Richard Chen 4/02/2020 5:54 PMIt was pretty easy to change my diet because I was planning to change my diet to meatless diet due to my weight. I wanted to decrease my weight during the quarantine period. Therefore, the challenged fit well with my plan. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
Richard Chen 4/02/2020 5:53 PMUsing more public transportation and eat less meat, like steak, would effectively reduce carbon emissions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Conserve Toilet WaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Richard Chen 3/31/2020 12:31 PMIn order to have a sustainable water future in my region, factories would need to stop polluting water. In some cases, farms also need to have less farm animals, so that chemicals like phosphate and nitrate would be less in water, making water quality and dissolved oxygen in water higher and better.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
Richard Chen 3/31/2020 12:29 PMBig food manufacturers and corporations at first didn't really care about the environment; they just cared about the capital. However, organizations like FDA and other NGO keep them in check and force them to be environmental friendly.-
Louisa Lubiak 4/03/2020 3:59 PMFood of the people, for the people and by the people! Support your local farmers market. :-)
