Jack's actions
Climate
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 1 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
People
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 2 hour(s) in my community helping people who are most at need right now, including elderly and immunocompromised people, people without childcare, and people whose jobs have been affected by social distancing measures.
Food
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 1 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Wildlife
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 10 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Jack Cherkes 4/19/2020 7:07 PMI can encourage biodiversity by my own actions by living sustainably. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
Jack Cherkes 4/08/2020 11:14 AMI can reduce carbon emissions by not using my car as much and instead using my bike or taking the pat bus. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Use a Reusable Water BottleUsing the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?
Jack Cherkes 4/06/2020 9:34 AMI can advocate for those who have been harmed by using a reusable water bottle daily and to tell other not stop using plastic bottles and to buy a reusable one.-
Cassie Sirockman-Bell 4/08/2020 7:25 AMI can think of 1-2 classmates that need to hear this :)

REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Conserve Toilet WaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Jack Cherkes 4/06/2020 9:34 AMSome things that need to change for a more sustainable water future is people waging water. Some simple things to do is to turn water faucet off and in while brushing your teeth and to only flush toilet when necessary. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Jack Cherkes 4/02/2020 10:10 AMI would most likely use a cart and not use bags and then put the items in my car. I would then carry them in the house with my hands. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Jack Cherkes 4/02/2020 10:09 AMVolunteering enhances my community by showing myself that I can do more and by showing other that they can help the community but just need the motivation to do so. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Jack Cherkes 4/02/2020 10:08 AMI’m not sure how I will use my compost once it is ready but I can definitely notice the difference of throwing away garbage and compost now. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Jack Cherkes 4/02/2020 10:07 AMIt connects me more to my community because it reassures myself that I care for the people around me and not just myself.
