Jerris's actions
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 3 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 4 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Wildlife
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 2 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Climate
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.

Jerris Marr 4/30/2020 12:05 PMThis has been a great challenge! A fun way of raising awareness and driving personal behavior shifts. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh WaterWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Jerris Marr 4/29/2020 4:07 PMDespite living in the NW, we face droughts each summer, and we have a high focus on storm water run-off. To help, as I've helped friends put in new landscaping and added more at my own property, I continue to utilized native plants, and those that are known for low water needs. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimateYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Jerris Marr 4/29/2020 4:04 PMmy utilization is very low due to single person household. However, there are behavioral shifts that I can make by watching use of lights, unplugging appliances, watching long showers, etc. -
Jerris Marr 4/29/2020 3:58 PMChallenge has been good. While I try to live earth friendly all of the time, the challenge has been very effective at helping me learn more and focus on my personal actions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Jerris Marr 4/16/2020 8:03 AMI typically use a reusable bag, or carry out by hand. If I do need to use a store bag, then I ask for paper, which I then use to collect my household recyclables and it's recycled as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Jerris Marr 4/16/2020 8:01 AMPollinators are a critical part of the ecosystem and without them , many aspects of the food chain would be adversely impacted. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Jerris Marr 4/16/2020 8:00 AMUrban deer - it's intriguing to me that in many suburban areas deer are adapting to cohabiting with people. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Jerris Marr 4/16/2020 7:58 AMIn the areas that I live I try to promote and support natural habitat by retaining or planting native plants, and supporting animal/insect life by planting/installing items that promote safe habitat. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh WaterHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Jerris Marr 4/16/2020 7:56 AM
Basic awareness, conscious decisions to behave differently and choose alternative solutions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh WaterUsing the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?
Jerris Marr 4/16/2020 7:55 AMThe most simple approach is by not fueling the bottled water demand and supply chain. By increasing my personal awareness and discipline I have been able to significantly reduce and nearly eliminate my use of water bottles.
