Carmen's actions
People
Write Letters or Emails
I will write 1 letter(s) or email(s) per day to a public official or company to advocate for planet-friendly and/or environmentally just policies.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 5 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 1 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 45 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Climate
Local Climate Issues
I will spend at least 10 minute(s) a day researching climate issues or climate solutions in my local area and share with others through my team feed, social media, or conversations with my peers.
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Carmen Proffitt 4/30/2020 2:10 PMMy job included this link in an email on Earth Day. It's a short list of apps to promote conscious consumerism. https://medium.com/naturehub/6-must-have-apps-for-conscious-consumers-a02a7e231f86-
Dale Engle 5/01/2020 10:32 AMHi Carmen, I'm curious as to which of the apps you use. And how good are they for local resources? Thanks! Dale -
Erin M 4/30/2020 4:13 PMThose are fabulous! I want to try them all - thank you!!!

Carmen Proffitt 4/24/2020 11:44 AMDrinking tea is a simple form of pleasure for me. I found this local brand and really like it so far. Here's a haiku about tea!

Kathy Conway 4/26/2020 3:36 PMI have a package of Oshala Farm's Be Nourished - love it. Elise Higley and her husband own this farm. She was a very powerful voice for the No GMO campaign. These are people we should support in any way possible. -
MaryAnn Shank 4/25/2020 11:27 AMI love sharing tea (and a cookie!) with friends. My tea collection takes up a whole drawer, plus counter space. Yesterday we had White Peony, and the day before we had Camomile with Probiotics. I must try your tea too! -
Erin M 4/24/2020 3:10 PMBeautiful poem, beautiful tea!

Carmen Proffitt 4/19/2020 12:00 AMAnybody else watch "One World: Together at home"? I did and honestly my favorite part was the very very last song. LOL. "The Prayer." Love that song. <3-
Ana B 4/21/2020 2:16 PMI didn't watch it, but I think it is still available. I will check it out! -
Davis Wilkins 4/20/2020 11:58 AMOur family was drawn to the screen the whole time--6 hours?! Not like us at all, but the combination of story, images, heartfelt personal messages and music was so connecting--across the globe!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Eco-friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Carmen Proffitt 4/17/2020 10:10 PMIn the Rogue Valley, we will experience increased land temperature thus increased evaporation and drought. We will have changes in precipitation intensities, jet streams, and prevailing winds thus increases in wildfires. Our regional groundwater is limited and often contains contaminants.-
Ana B 4/21/2020 2:19 PM@Carmen: I was just answering this question- thank you for sharing the evaporation issue!
@Davis: Thank you for sharing more about access issues. I grew up in an area that has huge access issues and was wondering if it was the same here. -
Davis Wilkins 4/20/2020 12:01 PMAccess is also an issue; meaning that not everyone has access to TID growing water...in my neighborhood, the marijuana and wine industries duke it out for increasingly expensive water rights and I see less farms/food...more weed and wine. Wish there was more balance....

Carmen Proffitt 4/15/2020 10:11 PMTrying to visualize which habits I've learned from EcoChallenge so far that will stick after this is over. Hardest things for me have been anything political and transportation related. Easiest things have been water conservation, food choices, and electricity usage. Slowly but surely I suppose.-
Ana B 4/16/2020 10:32 AMI agree! My hope is to take public transportation to town much more frequently when this is all over, rather than drive every day. -
Kathy Conway 4/15/2020 10:47 PMI agree with the transportation part. Before Covid 19 we would make at least 1 trip to town (20 minutes) each day and not we are doing 1 trip every 7-14 days. I think that after we can be around people again, I'll try to set 1 trip every 4-5 days but NEVER 2 trips in a day. We'll see if we can really do that.

Carmen Proffitt 4/13/2020 1:39 PMHelp: What are specific examples of Oregon native wildflowers I could plant here in the Rogue Valley? I've researched, but if you have specific suggestions of ones you love or know about please let me know!-
Ana B 4/16/2020 10:43 AMI had no idea, but Bleeding Heart is a local native, and beautiful in shady spots.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Carmen Proffitt 4/13/2020 1:33 PMIt's important to take care of pollinators because they help sustain our food supply, pollinate plants, and are food for all kinds of animals. I didn't know about https://www.pollinatorprojectroguevalley.org/ before, but I came across it in my research and thought it was cool. I am still struggling to find a good list of native wildflowers I could plant here in the Rogue Valley though. I bought a red & white columbine and a snow lady daisy. I also bought seeds for California poppy, catnip, and larkspur "shades of blue."

Carmen Proffitt 4/12/2020 11:04 PMToday I slept in, took a really long walk, and helped out with an Earth Day event. -
Carmen Proffitt 4/11/2020 9:05 PMI shared this with my Master Climate Protector class, but I thought I'd share it here too in response to Ana B's call for us all to post to the feed. My favorite cookbook is called "Thug Kitchen." It's a plant-based cookbook with some of the most delicious recipes I have ever tried. They swear a lot in the book, but it's all fun! They keep things simple instead of pretentious, and they do a really good job of explaining staple cooking concepts to allow anyone a shot at successfully cooking from scratch. I love it! It's a wake up call and guide to anyone interested in stepping up their kitchen game.
