Benjamin Rosano
"I am mainly doing this because I have recently been not able to swim because of how much pollution there was at my local beach, so by doing this, I guess it lets another person get through one more problem in their daily life. "

Benjamin's actions
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 80 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Wildlife
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 40 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 20 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Food
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
Bringing home unique souvenirs from trips you’ve enjoyed is meaningful, and giving people unique gifts from other places is fun. Seek souvenirs and gifts that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Climate
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Food
Advocate For More Food Options
Access to affordable, nutritious food is a food justice issue. I will advocate for local and/or organic food options in my state and/or community.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Forests
Spending Time Outside
Spend some time outside and get some fresh air (while following CDC guidelines)!!
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 180 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.

Benjamin Rosano 4/23/2020 5:44 AMDoes anyone know what you can do when you have done the maximum challenges (one-time and daily)? I even log in every day to complete the daily challenges and then there is no other way I can gain points. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh WaterWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Benjamin Rosano 4/20/2020 5:59 AMOne prominent concern in my area is pollution. Just about every morning I wake up, right across the street is a building that uses a ton of steam, which is, not a lot of pollution but they do it about every second of the day. So I think that that is definitely a major problem in my area. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building ResilienceWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Benjamin Rosano 4/17/2020 8:45 PMPollinators are vital to creating and maintaining the habitats and ecosystems that many animals rely on for food and shelter. Worldwide, over half the diet of fats and oils comes from crops pollinated by animals. They facilitate reproduction in 90% of the world's flowering plants. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimateWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Benjamin Rosano 4/17/2020 2:15 PMI don't usually fly via air travel, so I did not have to restructure my trip. We could avoid it by taking more trips to the country you're in, or you could avoid air travel by staying in your community and learning more about it rather than another one. Also, I don't think it is possible to be doing air travel now because of the situation. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?
Benjamin Rosano 4/17/2020 2:00 PMI think when you purchase say a chair or a table, you could be harming the wildlife of other communities because that wood in either of those items could have been used from a cut-down tree in an environment who depends on those trees as a habitat. When you look at a chair or even a table, you are only looking at one side of the "story". -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Benjamin Rosano 4/17/2020 1:04 PMThe animal that I decided to research were mice. One interesting fact about them is that they eat about 15 - 20 times per day. I also thought it was cool that they were really good at jumping!!-
Benjamin Rosano 4/20/2020 4:02 AMI thought that mice were never really seen as a favorite animal, and I personally always forgot about them. So I thought it would be nice to learn more about them. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Benjamin Rosano 4/17/2020 12:59 PMYou can encourage biodiversity with your own actions by not setting a bad example for others, which can include a large variety of things. When you plant a tree, you're encouraging biodiversity for animals who's habitats include trees or animals that live in trees. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat efforts would help food insecure regions have access to local, seasonal foods?
Benjamin Rosano 4/17/2020 10:44 AMI think people taking action by going to more food markets, would really help in marketing for those small food companies that help the environment by planting crops. -
