Tara's actions
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 25 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Food
Advocate For More Food Options
Access to affordable, nutritious food is a food justice issue. I will advocate for local and/or organic food options in my state and/or community.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Wildlife
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 25 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Climate
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Climate
Local Climate Issues
I will spend at least 25 minute(s) a day researching climate issues or climate solutions in my local area and share with others through my team feed, social media, or conversations with my peers.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Forest-Friendly FoodsHow difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Tara Rudd 4/30/2020 8:30 PMIt was difficult to remove coffee, but I do not use palm oil in my diet. I had to switch to tea instead of coffee which was not that difficult of a switch for me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Tara Rudd 4/29/2020 8:15 PMI am mindful of nonnative plant species and remove them when appropriate. I do not interfere with wild animals, and i do not touch nests when i see them. I always walk on paths and try not to disrupt natural plant growth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Tara Rudd 4/29/2020 8:10 PMDriving in a car does not allow me to connect to my community or environment. By biking I get to better enjoy the fresh air and get exercise which releases endorphins. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Local Climate IssuesIn what ways is your local community resilient to shock events like we’ve experienced recently? How could you help it become more resilient?
Tara Rudd 4/29/2020 8:08 PMMy community is not very resilient to shock events. The local community could become more resilient if they had better planning and listened to the scientists and healthcare workers about what is best for the community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Tara Rudd 4/28/2020 3:44 PMI am drawn to ecological problems in the marine environment. I always pick up trash when i see it and i am always hyper aware of my impact on the ocean, especially because i am a marine science major. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Tara Rudd 4/28/2020 3:42 PMMost grocery stores nowadays usually have reusable bags available at checkout, if i do not remember to bring my bags i will purchase a new one or i will take out my items using a cart or my hands if i only bought a few items. I always keep my reusable bags in my car so that i do not forget them when i go into the store. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Advocate For More Food OptionsWhat efforts would help food insecure regions have access to local, seasonal foods?
Tara Rudd 4/28/2020 3:37 PMThe production of sustainable and locally grown foods is essential for helping food insecure regions. Providing education on that specific areas climate and providing the resources to grow certain foods within those environmental conditions would also help food insecure regions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Tara Rudd 4/28/2020 3:21 PMI do not eat seafood, so my diet choices do fall within these guidelines. I refuse to eat seafood because of the major impacts of overfishing, in terms of destroying the environment through trawling, or overfishing specific species of fish and dwindling their populations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Tara Rudd 4/15/2020 8:49 PMIt empowers me to make better decisions about my food waste. Knowing the difference between these terms is essential for decreasing the extent of my food waste and putting me at ease for using products that many people would mistakenly label as spoiled. If everyone took the time to learn these terms, hopefully there would be less waste in the world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Tara Rudd 4/15/2020 8:46 PMIt is important to take care of pollinators because we rely on them to sustain the ecosystems and habitats that we rely on for sustenance. Pollination is necessary for plants to reproduce so if we did not have pollinators we would probably be in famine.
